Brand PhotoShoots
Reimagining Brand Photography & Multi-College Shoot Production

The University of Phoenix needed to continue to evolve its visual identity away from overly staged, slick, or cliché stock imagery toward candid, real world stories of working adult learners. The library of images had to represent adults balancing demanding careers, family commitments and the desire to pursue an education across diverse academic colleges, including Business, Nursing & Health Sciences, Military, Education, Criminal Justice, and Advanced Studies.
In a pre-AI era, there were no generative fill shortcuts or prompt-based fixes – every detail captured in-camera had to be deliberate, authentic, and align with brand standards.
As Creative Lead for the University of Phoenix, I led the creative vision  and continued to move away from staged stock photos to capture the candid, real-world stories of working adult learners. Executed in a pre-AI era, every detail was deliberately crafted across 51 shot setups, 11 real-world locations, 7 academic colleges, and 4 specialized audiences. From uniform regulatory compliance to high-resolution multi-format framing, this project elevated brand taste levels while aligning visual storytelling directly with core brand voice and real student outcomes.
Actions
01. Strategy: Brand-Driven Visual Systems
Mapped photo concepts directly to the brand's core communication pillars—Guidance and Community, Growth and Empowerment, and Practicality and Reality. Every shot was curated to embody the brand's optimistic, empowering, and pragmatic tone.

02. Art Direction: Elevating Aesthetic Standards
Replaced cliché tropes with sophisticated visual storytelling. I set strict creative standards for natural editorial lighting, authentic color palettes, cinematic framing, and refined wardrobe choices to elevate brand perception.

03. Narrative: Highlighting Authentic Success
Rather than focusing solely on classroom environments, I directed scenarios that portrayed students in legitimate positions of leadership – such as doctoral candidates presenting to corporate boards, nurses leading clinical hospital units, and military veterans successfully executing corporate executive meetings.

04. Production: Real-World Rigor & On-Set Detail
Authored detailed production guides specifying age, gender, ethnicity, and role requirements for both Hero talent and Background extras across authentic workplace scenarios. Guaranteed authentic representation by mandating real-world details, such as clipped nurse badges on scrubs and bringing an internal Military Division consultant on set to oversee 100% accuracy in uniform badges, grooming, hair styles, and military posture across all service branches. Directed shoots in real working environments, including active hospital nurse stations, police command centers, corporate boardrooms, small business showrooms, and military bases.

05. Governance: Scalable Asset Architecture
Instructed photographers to compose shots with ample background negative space and high resolution, ensuring images could be cleanly recropped for horizontal, vertical, and square ad units without cutting off subjects. Identified primary and alternate shots to be organized in standardized brand toolkits for internal teams and agency partners.
Results
Ultimately, this project demonstrated how rigorous creative leadership bridges the gap between high-level brand strategy and multi-location execution. By establishing an elevated aesthetic standard and enforcing strict pre-production discipline across 51 shot setups and 11 real-world environments, we built a versatile, scalable asset ecosystem that powered campaign and programmatic rollouts across digital, print, and outdoor channels for years. More than just an expansive media library, the imagery authentically reflected the lived realities and career ambitions of adult learners—proving that when brand voice, elevated taste, and operational precision align, visual storytelling becomes a powerful driver of brand trust and market distinction.
